From the Director: Governor Gregoire Addresses CLAC Attendees

By Stan Finkelstein, AWC Executive Director

This past Wednesday, Governor Christine Gregoire addressed the almost 400 city officials attending AWC’s annual City Legislative Action Conference (CLAC).

Her presentation focused on her priorities for Washington: enhancing the quality of education; addressing the rising costs of health care and the lack of health insurance for a large number of our state’s children and adults; and continuing to grow our state’s economy. She was sensitive to the problems of cities and towns, acknowledging concerns regarding the lack of affordable housing and the need to preserve and grow our export economy.

One Washington

In her presentation, the Governor continually referenced the ongoing AWC theme of "One Washington" – the need to disintegrate the "Cascade Curtain" and eliminate distinctions between eastern and western Washington. She highlighted her efforts to connect with the various regions of the state and praised local leaders for addressing the needs of their communities.

Governor Gregoire concluded her visit by responding to questions from city leaders. During the question and answer period, she reiterated her concerns about early childhood education, the need for a dialogue between city officials and the Department of Ecology regarding the proposed storm water regulations, and the general state-local partnership required to move the state into a preeminent 21st century position. City officials very much appreciated the Governor’s time and were pleased with her message.
