No Special Session For Now

In early May, the Governor decided not to call a special session to address the handful of measures that would have further reduced state spending. House and Senate leaders were not able to reach an agreement on which bills to bring up, which was Governor Gregoire’s stipulation for calling a special session.

As expected, the June forecast did predict further losses and the Governor imposed immediate additional cuts.Gregoire has stated that the only reason to reconvene would be if the recession gets worse and state revenues fall faster than projected. The earliest a special session would be held is September, or they may simply wait until January.

|The bills that were mentioned as the probable focus of a special session included: HB 1776 on school levy lifts; SB 6138 to suspend two education initiatives; SB 6183 on deporting immigrant offenders; SB 6160 on sentencing; HB 1776 on levy lifts. AWC has asked that the Brokered Natural Gas Use Tax be addressed.

AWC will keep you apprised via future Bulletins.
