AWC executive director announces retirement
Association of Washington Cities (AWC) Executive Director Stan Finkelstein recently announced his plans to retire in late January. Finkelstein worked at AWC for over 35 years, serving as executive director since 1990. "I leave with a sincere sense of sadness and gratitude for having the privilege of working with one of the finest local government associations in the state of Washington," Finkelstein said. "AWC has made a significant impact on all of our communities and their citizens, and I’m honored to have been part of the contribution." Finkelstein joined AWC in 1973 as assistant director of legislative services. He was named acting executive director in March 1990 and appointed executive director in June 1990. "Washington’s cities and towns definitely benefited from Stan’s work as director," said AWC President, Karen Rogers, Port Angeles councilmember. "Under his leadership, AWC’s programs and service consistently met the challenges facing Washington’s municipalities. "It is my belief that the Association is a stronger, more effective and vital organization than it was 20 years ago. AWC is regarded as the most effective of the local government advocacy organizations; our services program is highly regarded; and we provide a full array of cost effective and responsive insurance services. With the initiation of the AWC research program, and the State of the Cities publications, our reputation as a provider of high quality research has been recognized throughout the country," Rogers said. AWC’s Board of Directors named Mike McCarty, assistant director for Operations and Services, as acting executive director.
