From the Director

By Stan Finkelstein, AWC Executive Director

With less then a week remaining until the constitutionally limited 60 day session is scheduled to conclude, the Legislature is aggressively finishing up floor action and getting ready for adjournment.

At this stage of the session, most of the activity is either on the floor of the House or Senate, or behind closed doors.

Many of the AWC defensive issues are fortunately derailed for this year, but there is the constant fear that they may arise as amendments on otherwise "live" bills before the Legislature for final passage. On the positive side, we are still seeing a number of AWC-supported measures also scheduled for floor action.

While most of the drama in the closing days is on the floor, it is really behind closed doors that the key deals are being hammered out. Negotiations are underway regarding the differences between the House and Senate budgets; conference committees are being appointed to work out differences on other bills; and, in general, the Legislature intends to close down on March 13.

So far, this has been a relatively positive session for AWC, and the Association’s lobby team is especially grateful for those contacts from home that have provided invaluable assistance contributing to our success.

In April, AWC President, Rich Munson, aided by AWC Vice President, Karen Rogers, will appoint the 2008-09 Resolutions Committee. That committee will inaugurate the process leading to the development of the Association’s legislative priorities for 2009. . . and we begin again.

Thanks for all of your help this year!!
