Emergency Response

Staffing of Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program - U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Applications Due: June 30, 2006

The purpose of the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grants is to help fire departments increase their cadre of firefighters. The program’s goal is to enhance the local fire departments’ ability to attain and maintain 24-hour staffing, thus assuring their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. The SAFER grants have two activities that will help grantees in this endeavor:

  • Hiring of firefighters and
  • Recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters

Rural Access for Emergency Devices - U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Applications Due: June 26, 2006

Grant funding is available from the Department of Health & Human Services for the Rural Access for Emergency Devices program. Funds are available for partnerships defined as a consortium of first responders. The program provides funding to rural communities to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and provide training in their use and maintenance. Funding preference will be given to those community partnerships that are State-wide in scope.

Environment

Source Reduction Assistance Grants - U.S. Department of Environmental Protection

Applications Due: June 19, 2006

The U.S. Department of Environmental Protection has announced that seven Regional Pollution Prevention Programs, including Region 10, are accepting applications for grant funding for projects that support source reduction/pollution prevention and/or resource conservation activities. EPA is interested in funding projects which assist in reducing hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants entering waste streams or otherwise released into the environment prior to recycling, treatment or disposal.

Health and Wellness

Foster’s Community Grants

Applications Due: September 29, 2006

Foster’s Community Grants will support projects in three core focus areas: wellness, culture and the environment. Foster’s define “wellness” as both physical and mental health, “culture” as artistic, sporting and educational activities and ”environment” as all aspects of the natural environment. Grants are assessed principally on the quality of the community benefit they would deliver.

Infrastructure

Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program - WA State Dept. of Transportation (DOT)

Applications Due: September 20, 2006

The purpose of the Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety program is to aid public agencies in funding cost-effective projects that improve pedestrian and bicycle safety through engineering, education and enforcement. A total of approximately $7 million of state funds is available. The Governor’s office and the legislature will make final determination for projects and awards. Preference shall be given to projects that provide match.

Safe Routes to School Program - WA State Dept. of Transportation (DOT)

Applications Due: October 2, 2006

The Safe Routes to School Program is supported by both the Federal Government and Washington State Legislature through recent legislation. The Program includes a state funding commitment to support pedestrian and bicycle safety projects such as safe routes to school, transit and pedestrian and bicycle paths. The purpose of the Safe Routes to Schools program is to provide children a safe, healthy alternative to riding the bus or being driven to school. Eligible projects must be within two-miles of primary and middle schools (K-8).

Funding Events, Workshops, and Resources

Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) FY2008 Funding Program Workshops

The Transportation Improvement Board will be conducting funding workshops throughout the state in June 2006 for TIB’s FY 2008 funding program.
TIB's funding workshops provide information about the various funding programs TIB administers and the scoring criteria for each program. These workshops are intended to increase the probability of a successful project application.

Urban Workshops are for counties or a city with a population of greater than 5,000. Small City Workshops are for incorporated cities with a population of less than 5,000.

Social and Health Services

Promoting Responsible Fatherhood - U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Applications Due: July 3, 2006

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has announce the released of $32 million in grant funds to support the Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Program. The grants are for innovative, well-designed projects that support the following activities areas: Healthy Marriage; Responsible Parenting; and Economic Stability. The context for these activities is to create an environment that contributes to the well being of children.

Intervention and Practice Research Infrastructure Program - U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Applications Due: Multiple receipt dates

The National Institute of Mental Health seeks research partnership for its Intervention and Practice Research Infrastructure Program. The Department seeks partnerships between mental health researchers and community-based, clinical/services staff, clinicians and patients/clients to: advance knowledge in research infrastructure; identify and incorporate those factors in community settings; and plan, test, and implement services in community settings.
