The Norman Foundation supports efforts that strengthen the ability of communities to determine their own economic, environmental and social well-being, and that help people control those forces that affect their lives. These efforts may:

Community Awareness & Outreach Prevention of Family Violence — US Dept. of Health & Human Services
Applications Due: June 11, 2006
These grant funds assist in the continual development of outreach and community awareness campaign projects and activities that provides information for the prevention of family violence. Projects should provide information on resources, facilities and service alternatives available to family violence victims and their dependents, community organizations, local school districts and individuals seeking assistance.

Weed and Seed Communities Competitive Program — US Dept. of Justice
Applications Due: January 31, 2007
The U.S. Department of Justice, has announced the Weed and Seed Communities Competitive Program which aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse, and gang activity. The initiative is a community-based, comprehensive multi-agency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and neighborhood restoration. It is designed for neighborhoods with persistent high levels of serious crime and corresponding social problems.

Consumer Education About Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions Through Awareness and Use of Energy-Efficient Products and Practices — US Dept. of Environmental Protection

The Department of Environmental Protection, Climate Protection Partnerships Division seeks to fund proposals that will increase overall consumer understanding and relevance of the connection between energy efficiency and the environment on national, regional and local levels. Proposals should demonstrate consumer advocacy and social marketing, and knowledge of energy efficiency and environmental issues.

Commercial Truck Driver Health & Safety-Preventing Injury and Illness Program — US Dept. of Health & Human Services
Applications Due: July 22, 2006
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services invites applications to conduct research projects that address specified work-related safety and health issues affecting large truck operators. The intent is to stimulate and fund research that will address work-related health issues associated with commercial truck driving. The desired outcomes are to characterize health risks, and ultimately to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions to reduce specific work-related health risks thus enhance driver health.

Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program — US Dept. of Justice

The Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program will increase public safety by facilitating collaboration among the criminal justice, juvenile justice, and mental health and substance abuse treatment systems to increase access to services for offenders with mental illness. The Program encourages proposals which focus on intervention; provide for new and existing mental health courts with various treatment options; maximizes diversion opportunities for nonviolent offenders and many other activities.

Community Awareness and Outreach Campaign Projects for the Prevention of Family Violence — US Dept. of Health & Human Services

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services recently announced the availability of grants funds to increase the awareness and outreach to prevent family violence. The goal is to provide for the distribution of credible and persuasive information by community organizations to help break the cycle of family violence.

Funding Events, Workshops and Resources
Upcoming Emergency Management Grant Opportunity
The Emergency Management Division was appropriated $1.6 million in the State Fiscal Year 2007 budget for competitive emergency management preparedness projects.
Eligible projects under the Emergency Management Preparedness Assistance Grant (EMPAG) may include:
- Development and coordination of emergency plans.
- Training of elected officials and appointed officials in disaster response.
- Administration of joint emergency management training exercises.
- Implementation of projects to strengthen emergency response, mitigation, preparation and coordination.
Short term, high impact projects are recommended as awardees will have less than 12 months to complete projects. Additional parameters, including eligibility information and timelines, will be included with the application guidance currently under development. The application period is expected to begin in May. Application guidance will be available soon. Please check www.emd.wa.gov periodically for announcements.
