Farm Labor Housing Loans & Farm Labor Housing Grants for Off-Farm Housing - U.S. Department of Agriculture

Applications due: May 19, 2006

The USDA, Rural Housing Service (RHS) has announced loan and grant funds for the construction of new off-farm Farm Labor Housing (FLH) units and related facilities for domestic farm laborers. The purpose of these funds is to increase the number of available housing units for domestic farm laborers.

Housing Preservation Grant Program - U.S. Department of Agriculture

Applications due: May 19, 2006

The USDA, Rural Housing Service (RHS) has announced over $10 million in Housing Preservation Grant (HPG) funds to assist very low-income and low-income homeowners in repairing and rehabilitating their homes in rural areas. The HPG program can also assist rental property owners and cooperative housing complexes in repairing and rehabilitating units available to low and very low-income populations.

Lead-Safe for Kids Sake Grant - U.S. Conference of Mayors and DuPont Partnership

Applications due:  April 21, 2006

Cities United for Science Progress (CUSP), a partnership between The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and DuPont, invites your city to “Think Big” and apply for the 2006 “Lead-Safe for Kids Sake” grant program. The “Lead-Safe…for Kids’ Sake” grant recognizes cities with the most outstanding lead-safe strategies implemented through programs, public policy, education, or joint efforts with local stakeholders.

For the most outstanding lead-safe strategy, one city will receive the $175,000 Award of Excellence, and two cities $100,000 Awards of Distinction for lead-safe best practices. Of special interest are innovative and replicable lead-safe strategies and practices that will leverage the winning resources. Applicant cities must be members of The United States Conference of Mayors.

Master License Service’s (MLS) “Get On Board” Program

Applications due: Ongoing

Master License Service’s (MLS) “Get on Board” Grant Program was approved by the legislature this year (HB2131). The Department of Licensing program streamlines business licensing and registration for customers. It can also greatly reduce the paperwork associated with business license administration for cities.

The “Get on Board” Program, which currently represents 10 state agencies and five cities, is ready to expand. The purpose of the grant is to help overcome obstacles to partnership, like changes to computer systems or updates to business license ordinances. The MLS is designed to provide benefits to cities and customers alike while improving services, increasing compliance and saving time and money.

Safeco Foundation Community Grants

Applications due: May 26, 2006; August 11, 2006; October 27, 2006

The Safeco Foundation, Community Grants Program has funds available for Puget Sound and Spokane areas to build vibrant and successful neighborhoods. Funding priorities focus on three areas:

  1. Building an economic foundation for strong neighborhoods through small business development, homebuyer education programs and homeowner insurance education
  2. Protecting the foundation of strong neighborhoods through loss prevention education programs and safety and disaster preparedness programs, and
  3. Helping neighborhoods flourish and thrive through festivals that attract diverse audiences, community clean-ups and beautification projects and the creation or enhancement of pocket parks and gathering places.

Healthy Systems Challenge Grant - Washington Health Foundation

Applications due: Accepted through November 1, 2006 

The Washington Health Foundation’s, 2006 Healthy Systems Challenge builds on the Foundation’s efforts from last year in which 17,000 individuals, 155 elementary schools and 350 public and private organizations walked, jogged, exercised and answered healthy systems questions, earning over One Million Miles.

The 2006 Healthy Systems Challenge takes that further with a Ten Million Mile Challenge. To assist with this effort, the Washington Health Foundation has mini-grants available to support and encourage organizations. Grants can range from $500 to $15,000 and are available for creating policies, programs and environments that make healthy choices the easy choices. A total of $250,000 will be awarded.

Community Connect Grant Program - U.S. Department of Agriculture

Applications due: May 15, 2006

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced the release of $8.9 million in funds for the Community Connect Grant Program. The Community-Oriented Connectivity Broadband Grant Program is designed to provide financial assistance in the form of grants to eligible applicants that will provide currently unserved areas, on a “community-oriented connectivity” basis, with broadband transmission services that fosters economic growth and delivers enhanced educational, health care, and public safety services.

Integrated Corridor Management - U.S. Department of Transportation

Applications due: May 15, 2006

The U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration has announced the availability of over $12.5 million in funds for Integrated Corridor Management. The purpose of this solicitation is to select up to eight sites for assessment of their capability to demonstrate integrated corridor management (ICM).

Integrated corridor management is defined as the operational coordination of multiple transportation networks and cross-network connections comprising a corridor, and the coordination of institutions responsible for corridor mobility. The goal of this initiative is to develop and provide the organizational guidance, operational capabilities, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technical methods needed for effective integrated corridor management.

Social & Human Services

Field Initiated Demonstration Program - U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)

Applications due: May 1, 2006

The purpose of the Field Initiated Demonstration Program is to foster innovations and advancement in juvenile justice related practice at the local, state, and tribal government levels. The program provides start-up funding, not long-term support. OJJDP funds should be used to implement a program strategy and develop a sustainability plan for continuing project activities when the award period ends. Awards will be made in the form of cooperative agreements. OJJDP is particularly interested in proposals that enlist diverse multidisciplinary agency and community involvement in solving problems.
