Brownfield Economic Development Initiative (BEDI) - U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD)

A grant announcement released by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development provides $10 million in Brownfield Economic Development Initiative funds to help local governments redevelop brownfields. A brownfield is defined as an abandoned, idled, or underutilized real property, including commercial facilities, where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by the presence or potential presence of environmental contamination. The grant award will be conditioned upon and must be used in conjunction with a Section 108-guaranteed loan commitment.

Boating Facilities Program (BFP) - Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation

The Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation has announced grant funding to acquire, develop, and renovate boating facilities, including launching ramps, transient moorage, and to support fresh and saltwater facilities.

Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) - Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation
Applications Due: May 1, 2006
The Boating Infrastructure Grant Program (BIG) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Interior and U.S. Department of Fish & Wildlife Services provides funding for recreational transient boating facilities, targeting the needs of recreational boats 26 feet and larger. Grant recipients must provide at least 25% matching funds in either cash or in-kind contributions. Grants will be evaluated on how the project addresses the identified needs and priorities of a statewide boating infrastructure plan, its technical merits, public/private partnerships, cost efficiency and its economic impact.

Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) - Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation
Applications Due: May 1, 2006
The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) provides funding to assist in preserving, developing, and assuring accessibility to outdoor recreation resources including but not limited to parks, trails, wildlife lands, and other lands and facilities. Grant recipients must provide at least 50% matching funds in either cash or in-kind contributions. Grants are to be evaluated based on how the project addresses the identified needs and priorities of a statewide comprehensive or strategic plan.

Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account (ALEA) - Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation
Applications Due: May 1, 2006
The Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account (ALEA) Grant Program provides grant-in-aid support for the purchase, improvement, or protection of aquatic lands for public purposes, and for providing and improving access. Projects can include re-establishing naturally self-sustaining ecological functions related to aquatic lands, providing or restoring public access to the water, and increasing public awareness of aquatic lands as a finite natural resource and irreplaceable public heritage.

National Recreational Trails Program (NRTP) - Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation

The Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation has announced National Recreational Trails Program (NRTP) funds to rehabilitate and maintain recreational trails and facilities that provide a backcountry experience. Project examples include maintenance of recreational trails, development of trail-side and trail-head facilities, construction of new trails, operation of environmental education and trail safety programs.

Assistance for Firefighters Grant Program (AFG) - U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Applications Due: April 7, 2006
The Department of Homeland Security has announced the availability of over $539 million in grant funds for firefighter assistance. The purpose of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is to award one-year grants directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations in order to enhance their abilities with respect to fire and fire related hazards. This program seeks to support organizations that lack the tools and resources necessary to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and their emergency response personnel. Grant funds can be used for training, personal protective equipment, wellness/fitness efforts, modifications to facilities as well as to purchase and refurbish fire vehicles and apparatus.

Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund
In a partnership with the Columbia River Estuary Study Task Force (CREST) Enterprise, the Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund offers low interest loans combined with technical assistance to remove petroleum hydrocarbon (gasoline, diesel and heating oil) contamination from land.
The Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund (BRLF) is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is available throughout coastal Washington. Priority is placed on sites that can be redeveloped after clean up to create jobs, open space, and economic development activity.

Northwest Cooperative Development Center
The NW Cooperative Development Center helps preserve rural communities through the exploration of cooperative partnerships. The program is designed to work with communities faced with the potential demise of a critical enterprise to see if its purchase as a consumer cooperative by its customers would be a viable solution.
