Community Development

AWC Diversity Learning Grants

Applications Due: May 31, 2006

The Association of Washington Cities has announced the availability of $10,000 in Diversity Learning Grants available to cities. These grant funds are designed to help cities enhance diversity and can be used in a variety of ways to support these efforts. The general grant amount is $1,000.

Washington Commission for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps State Program Grants

Applications Due: March 3, 2006 (Letter of Intent)

The Washington Commission for National and Community Services (WCNCS) has funds to operate AmeriCorps in Washington State. A required Letter of Intent is due to WCNCS to later than March 3, 2006. The grants are available through state formula funds on a competitive basis. Proposals must utilize AmeriCorps to address the most critical education, public safety, environmental, or human service needs in Washington communities. The funding from this grant would be used partially to cover the cost for AmeriCorps members as well as administrative costs to operate a program. A match is required.

Economic Development

Economic Development Programs Grants - U.S. Department of Commerce

Applications Due: On-going

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced over $250 million in Economic Development grant funds for FY2006. The Department is seeking only those investment proposals that will significantly benefit areas and regions experiencing or threatened with substantial economic distress, including, but not limited to high levels of unemployment, low income levels, large concentrations of low-income families, significant declines in per capita income, substantial loss of population because of the lack of employment opportunities, large numbers (or high rates) of business failures, sudden major layoffs or plant closures, trade impacts, military base closures, natural or other major disasters, depletion of natural resources, or reduced tax bases.

U.S. Department of Transportation, Small Community Air Service Development Program

Applications Due: April 7, 2006

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Small Community Air Service Development Program is soliciting grant applications to improve air service to small communities. The program is designed to support small towns and cities working to attract or improve air services. $10 million has been set-aside for up to 40 grants. DOT will give priority to communities that have high airfares compared to other communities, contribute financially to the projects from sources other than airport revenues, have established or will establish public/private partnerships to improve air service and offer proposals that will benefit a broad segment of the public with limited access to the national transportation system.

Historical Preservation

Archival and Records Projects Grant - National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC)

Applications Due: August 1, 2006 (Draft Deadline)

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) recently announced funding for Archival and Records Project Grants. The Commission supports projects to facilitate the use of historical records. The NHPRC supports identifying, collecting, describing, reformatting, and preserving documentary sources significant to the history and culture of the United States. The program also supports projects to develop tools and techniques for the profession and projects to address professional education activities.

Natural Resources

Grants for Riparian Areas - Washington Wildlife & Recreation Coalition

Applications Due: March 15, 2006 (Letter of Intent)
May 1, 2006 (Final Application)

State legislation that was passed last year creates grants to conserve vanishing farmland and to protect the state’s rivers, lakes, streams, and marine environments. Riparian Protection Grants are available to protect and/or restore shorelines, rivers, streams, estuaries and other waterways.  This is one of just a few sources for riparian protection that doesn't require the presence of salmon.

Grants for Farmland Conservation - Washington Wildlife & Recreation Coalition

Applications Due: March 15, 2006 (Letter of Intent)
May 1, 2006 (Final Application)

Farmland Conservation grants are available to help cities and counties conserve working farms and lands that will stay in private hands and remain active agricultural enterprises for generations to come.  In most Washington counties these grants will be the only funding source for farm conservation easements (other than a small share of the federal Farm and Ranchlands Protection Program).

Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program - U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services

Application Due: No Specific Deadline

The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program provides financial assistance on a competitive basis to landowners (can be defined as local government) interested in restoring fish and wildlife habitat on their own lands. The Partners for Fish & Wildlife Program focuses its projects in watersheds where conservation efforts will provide the greatest benefits for Federal trust species.

Drug Free Communities Support Program - U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

Application Deadline: April 10, 2006

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), has announced the availability of grants funds for the Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC). DFC program has two major goals; to reduce substance abuse among youth and adults and to establish and strengthen collaboration among communities and support agencies.

Training and Technical Assistance Program for Mentoring Initiative for System Involved Youth Grant - U.S. Department of Justice

Application Due: April 17, 2006

The U.S. Department of Justice, Training and Technical Assistance Program for Mentoring Initiative for System Involved Youth has funds available to enhance and expand existing mentoring strategies; programs to develop, implement, and pilot test mentoring strategies and programs designed for youth involved in the juvenile justice system, reentry or foster care.

State Department of Personnel Grant Writing Workshop

The State Department of Personnel will offer two, 3-day grant writing workshops in Olympia during April and June. You’ll learn what works and doesn’t work in the grant process. This course will be taught by grant writers who’ve obtained millions for their clients. The cost is $155.

Washington Finance Officers Grant Writing Workshop

The Washington Finance Officers Association (WFOA) will be offering a grant research and writing workshop in Longview, Washington on June 27, 2006. The session will provide an introduction to websites for grant funding research and help you determine if your organization and project will qualify. The cost is $100.

Washington Finance Officers Federal (WFOA) Grant Requirements and Management Course

This course provides an overview of auditing and accounting requirements related to federal grants including how to account and report on grants. The course is offered by the State Auditor in conjunction with WFOA and will be offered from March through October throughout the state. The cost is $40.
